Farmácia Algarve launches awareness campaign for colon cancer

The Farmácia Algarve is offering colon cancer screening in Messines, in order to encourage early detection of an illness that kills some 11 people every day in Portugal. Early stage diagnosed colon cancer has close to 90% chance of being cured!

 

The campaign “Early Diagnosis can Save your Life” aims to raise awareness about the screening tests available, the symptoms, risk factors and prevention of colon cancer and also to offer 100 free Fecal Occult Blood Tests (FOBT) to the local community.

 

The screening is free, limited to 100 people, and is offered based on the following criteria:

• Aged between 50 and 74 years old
• Has not undertaken a FOBT or colonoscopy within the last 5 years
• With no relevant symptoms
• No first-degree relatives with colorectal cancer
• With no personal past history of cancer
• Not previously diagnosed with colorectal polyps, or with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis)

Every year, there are 7,000 new cases.
