DOG EAR INFECTIONS: KNOW THE SIGNS OF ALERT

Monday, 13 de January de 2020 - 14:38

Dog ear infections are a common pathological condition in dogs. Breeds with pendular ears and dogs with allergies are more likely to have ear infections.

Dog ear infections are a common pathological condition in dogs, characterised by inflammation of the ear and ear canal and can affect one or both ears.

Certain breeds of dogs with pendular ears (Cocker, Labrador, Portuguese Water Dog, Cavalier King Charles) and/or with excess hair in the ear have a greater predisposition to ear infections.

Dogs with allergies (atopic dermatitis or food hypersensitivity), conditions that lead to increased ear canal moisture, injuries and the presence of ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) also contribute to increase the incidence of ear infections.

KNOW THE SIGNS OF ALERT

The diagnosis begins at home. The dog often shakes its head, scratches one or both ears intensely, may have pain to the touch, and the ear has darker-coloured cerumen with an intense smell.

Confirmation of the diagnosis is possible only after a thorough examination of the ear canal and a microscopic examination of the ear secretion. Ideally, laboratory tests such as a culture and antibiogram will be needed to determine the infectious agent responsible for the ear infection and the most appropriate treatment.
