DO YOU HAVE DIABETES? WATCH YOUR FEET!

The name “Diabetic Foot” arises from problems that occur as a complication of Diabetes. The feet of people with this condition become drier, often with cracks.

Diabetes is characterised by increased blood sugar levels. Responsible for the slow destruction of cells through chemical processes, the most common pathologies appear in the eyes, kidneys, heart and feet – known as Peripheral Diabetic Neuropathy.

The latter is characterised by lesions to the nerves that ultimately cause changes in sensation, pain, paralysis, feeling very hot feet, tingling or numbness.

The feet of people with this condition become drier, often with cracks, due to the lack of the skin's natural greasiness and moisture mechanism. If these symptoms are associated with other conditions, the likelihood of progressing to an ulcer increases.

The Holon Diabetic Foot Service is provided by General Care Nurses, with specialised training in the area.
