COLOURING AGENTS: COLOURFUL FOODS BUT NOT ALWAYS HEALTHY
Wednesday, 04 de December de 2019 - 17:02
The colouring agents in food have come to stay. Nutritionists argue that the authorities properly control the food sector. Even so, be mindful of nutrition labelling.
Appetisers, sauces, pastries and bakery products, pre-cooked meals, jellies, soft gums, soft drinks...The list of foods containing colouring agents is long and there is no getting away from them!
Although they are part of our daily food, the use of these additives in food is not consensual. There are numerous studies that see the use of food colourings with some reservation. Hyperactivity and concentration difficulties in children, and the suspected worsening of asthma symptoms are the main risks pointed out by a British study, published in 2007 in the journal The Lancet.
With the aim of calming consumers and ensuring a high level of human health protection, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has re-evaluated the safety of 45 authorised food colouring agents. In this review, the quantities of some daily colouring agents were revised downwards and another (E 128) was even withdrawn from the market.
As a precaution, experts recommend avoiding frequent consumption of industrially processed foods. In addition to colouring agents, these foods may contain other substances that may be harmful to one's health!
